My favorite summertime memory ….playing all saying the neighbor hood, riding my bicycle with my friends (downhill with no hands), playing on my grandmother’s front porch and taking naps on her sleeping porch after helping pick pole beans in the garden. I loved the sound of her old wooden screen door that would clap with every cousin of mine that ran through it. Heaven is a southern, barefoot, backyard summer….
It should read playing all day outside in the neighborhood ….
My favorite summer memory…..seeing my two sisters travel to the beach one from an air force base in Okc and two of us from Pa sharing time with our children only wish pop would have done the trip too to see his girls and grandchildren at the beach, next year pop next year!
I grew up where there is not much rainfall in the summer and my favorite summertime memory was carrying buckets of water in our bathing suits to this huge mound of dirt (which seamed gigantic when you are little) and creating these awesome mud slides with my cousins.
Taking over the woods and fields with my neighborhood pals. Cutting back the pickers and building paths, tunnels and forts. Running back to our parents sheds to confiscate supplies for our lair and not coming home until dinnertime full of dirt and scrapes. Then sleeping well from a hard days work and dreaming about what we would create tomorrow.
Playing basketball outdoors with my neighborhood friends late into those long warm summer nights! Just being carefree and not worried about the next day, since there was no school and no homework and just no other responsibilities. These days when I talk to kids of friends and family, it is surprising how times have changed and that rather than playing outdoors, kids play indoors, mostly computer games and on the internet. When we were kids we were always told by our parents to go play outside and that is what all the other kids did too. Then again, there was no speedy internet service and the computer games were nowhere close to what they are today. So maybe no wonder why all the kids decide it is just as fun to stay home!
My favorite summer memory…. spending every summer with my great grandmother as I grew up. She was very much like a mother to me, both with her love and guidance. I used to go strawberry picking with her, help with her flower beds and cook tasty meals together. I find myself often thinking about those great times during this time of the year! Boy do I miss her…. <3
